UNHCR Speaks to Syrian Twins Who Survived Mediterranean Crossing

The UNHCR said it was “deeply concerned” after a boat carrying migrants to Europe capsized on Monday, April 13, with hundreds of lives feared lost. In a new video, released on April 16, the UNHCR speaks to Syrian twin brothers, named as Mohammed and Iyla, who survived the crossing to Europe after fleeing Aleppo in 2013.

Speaking about his experience, Mohammed says, “If we had stayed we would have been dead in the Middle East. You only die once in your life. We decided to risk dying trying to reach here.” Credit: UNHCR
