New Zealand Moves Motion to Express Support for Cyclone-Hit Pacific Islands

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key moved a motion on Tuesday, March 17, for parliament to show its support for Vanuatu and other Pacific islands hit by ex-Cyclone Pam. The motion was agreed on a voice vote.

Key said Cyclone Pam was the “worst disaster in Vanuatu’s recent history”, as thousands were left homeless and at least 24 people were killed. He said New Zealand will focus on the “redevelopment of port and waterfront infrastructure” and “long-term rebuild” of the island nation.

Ex-Cyclone Pam brought high winds and waves to northeastern New Zealand on March 17, leaving thousands without power. Chatham Islands Mayor Alfred Preece declared a state of emergency for the islands as the ex-cyclone was expected to move southeast and lie east to them on the evening of March 17.
