If you're a fan of trashy but enjoyable '00s action cinema, you might remember S.W.A.T. from 2003.

Colin Farrell, Samuel L Jackson and Michelle Rodriguez starred in the box office hit, which was based on the 1970s TV series of the same name.

Now, CBS has announced that it's ordered a new TV pilot, based on the film. Which was based on a TV show.

Yes, it's 2017 and entertainment has officially eaten itself.

In the series, a S.W.A.T. lieutenant is put in charge of a highly-trained unit, but finds his loyalty divided between his squad and the LA streets where he grew up, according to Deadline.

If you're struggling to get excited over another Hollywood rehash, we get it. But don't dismiss the new S.W.A.T. just yet, because Shawn Ryan – creator of seminal cop show The Shield – is the man between the reboot.

What's more, Justin Lin – who's helmed four entries in the Fast & Furious franchise – is on board as executive producer and will also direct the pilot.

With Ryan's solid TV credentials and Lin's proven track record in reviving a flagging franchise, we could actually be in for something a bit special here.

No word yet on if any of the movie's cast will appear in the pilot - but we all know how much Samuel L Jackson loves a cameo...
