On Tuesday, June 6, the trailer for the upcoming, gloriously bloody, LGBTQ+ comedy Bottoms starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri dropped. Directed by Emma Seligman and co-written by Sennott, the film is described as a ruthless and hysterical parody of the teen sex comedy.

After getting threatened with expulsion for fighting back against their school’s star football player Jeff, the two protagonists PJ (played by Sennott) and Josie (played by Edebiri), who are dubbed the “ugly, untalented gays” of their school, come up with the excuse that they were simply practising for their “self-defence club.”

Their lie gets out of hand fast and, before they know it, not only have they formed a fight club for girls, but they begin to envision a future version of their high school experience that seems a little brighter.

“Jeff is psychotic and they’re picking on the weak and defenceless,” PJ reveals in the trailer. “So, we teach a bunch of girls how to defend themselves, they are grateful to us, adrenaline is flowing, next thing you know, Isabel and Brittany are kissing us on the mouth!”

Being credited for being very supportive of women, “especially the hot ones”, the two friends keep dreaming about their cheerleader crushes, while around them, fists are starting to fly.

Among loose teeth and broken noses, the fight club starts gaining traction “and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defence,” the official synopsis says. “But PJ (Sennott) and Josie (Edebiri) find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.”

Finally being able to “beat up some football players”, the girls in Bottoms emancipate themselves, feeling like they’re ready to “finally reverse stalk my stalker!”. With such a storyline, this teen girl fight club is sure to become the LGBTQ+ comedy sensation of the summer.

Next to Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri, Bottoms also stars Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, Nicholas Galitzine, Dagmara Dominczyk, Marshawn Lynch, Ruby Cruz, Miles Fowler and Punkie Johnson.

The movie premiered earlier this year at the 2023 SXSW film festival and will be released in cinemas this August. Watch the trailer below for a first look!
