Watch: Northern Lights put on dazzling display over dark Reykjavik

This is the spectacular moment the Northern Lights put on an incredible display for residents in Reykjavik.

Officials switched off the lights in the Icelandic capital in preparation for one of nature’s most impressive spectacles.

Street lighting remained off for an hour in the city and several local district from 10pm so that the Northern Lights could be seen unhindered.

Many residents in the city also kept their houses in darkness so they could marvel in the moment.

Astronomy educator Saever Helgi Bragason praised the council for plunging the city into darkness.

He told the BBC: “Switching off the street lights was a great gesture by the city council…

“I hope this will be done more often as it was very successful, especially for those who were patient enough to wait for the lights to appear.

"It also encouraged more people to go out and look up to the night sky, which is great!”

The Northern Lights are a result of the Earth being in the path of a stream of charged particles escaping from the Sun, known as a solar wind.
