Watch: Stranger stops drunk man from driving by taking his keys away and calling the police

This is the responsible moment a stranger stopped another man from driving after realising he was drunk.

Danny Tiplady was filmed pleading with the man in his 30s not to drive after watching him stumble several times while walking towards a blue Mazda in a packed car park in Maidstone, Kent.

After the man got into his car and insisted he was “fine”, Mr Tiplady decided to take matters into his own hands and grabbed the keys before calling the police.

Mr Tiplady can be heard saying: “Honestly, I’ve seen you climb over the gate there and you nearly fell over three times – you shouldn’t be behind the wheel of this car.

“You shouldn’t be driving, I’m just worried you’re going to hurt somebody.

“I don’t want to cause any trouble but I don’t want to see anybody hurt either.

“I can’t let you do it mate, I can’t let you drive that car, I’m going to have to ring the police on you.”

Officers who arrived on the scene then confiscated the driver’s keys and did not let him collect them from the station until the next day.

Mr Tiplady is convinced his actions saved someone’s life.

He said: “I was Snapchatting him almost falling over and I genuinely thought it was funny but then he got in the driver’s seat and it struck me with fear.

“I went past the A1 crash six hours after it happened on Thursday and I didn’t want to see something like that on the news and known I could have done something.

“The park was full of parents and kids and if he had reversed too heavy footed who knows the chaos.

“I felt I was the only one to see him drunk and get into the car so I needed to stop him.

“I know I saved someone’s life today, I’ll never know who and they will never know it either.”

A Kent Police spokesman said: “Police were called at 2.28pm on Friday 10 March to Mote Park, Maidstone following concerns from members of the public about a man who they reported as being intoxicated and about to drive his car.

“Officers attended and took the man’s car keys from him.

“He was advised to make his way to his home address and collect his keys from the police station the next day.”
