Britons are set to make the United States their favourite holiday destination in 2017, according to a new study.

Research by online travel firm Expedia shows that America is the place most Brits would like to visit next year, with New York likely to top any holiday destination league table.

Las Vegas and Orlando are set to follow close behind.

Other popular destinations, according to Expedia, will be the Italian capital Rome, Amsterdam and sun-seekers will mostly head to Tenerife.

Barcelona and Reykjavik will also prove popular in 2017, and the favourite destination in the Middle East for Britons will be Dubai.

For those wanting a staycation, London is the place to go.

It was the chosen as the fifth most popular city to visit in 2017, up from 10th this year, according to Expedia.

Also at home, the English south west is predicted to enjoy the biggest growth in tourism, followed by Glasgow and former tourist powerhouse, Blackpool.
