Cult BBC game show The Weakest Link is being rebooted, with comedian Romesh Ranganathan stepping up to ask the questions, the broadcaster has said.

The quick-fire game show ran from 2000 until 2012, with Anne Robinson acting as the no-nonsense quizmaster.

It returned in 2017 for a Children In Need special, but has been off UK screens since.

A number of international versions have been spawned, including in the US, where it is hosted by Glee star Jane Lynch.

But now, the latest version will be broadcast on BBC One with celebrity contestants.

Ranganathan will oversee proceedings, which will see the famous faces work as a team to win money for charity.

The comedian said: "It's an honour to be asked to bring what is basically a TV institution back to our screens. Anne was an amazing host and to step into her shoes is an anxiety-inducing privilege.

"I'm hoping we've found a way to make both the fans of the show happy as well as bringing a new audience to it. If not, accept this as my apology."

Original host Robinson, whose often controversial remarks to contestants have recently been resurfaced, has now moved on as the host of Channel 4's Countdown.

She recently admitted that any new host would need an "entirely different approach" to her, because "woke has happened" since she stopped presenting it, adding: "I imagine there's a great many things that I said that you couldn't say now."

The latest iteration of The Weakest Link will be filmed in Glasgow and consist of 12, 45-minute-long episodes, according to the BBC.
