Holidaymakers are being warned that Spain will see its first heatwave of the season this weekend with the mercury reaching 40C in some areas.

Weather forecasters say widely high temperatures are expected in Spain by Saturday, June 22. They could even end up breaking the 40C barrier, according to Spanish news site The Olive Press.

It's also likely this heatwave could last until the end of June - which could be a sign of a "long and intense" summer season. Meteorologist Jose Miguel Viñas said: "We are heading straight to the 40C mark."

The reason for this warmer weather is because of an 'anticyclonic' pattern sweeping in which results in clear skies and an increase in temperatures throughout Spain. Jose added: "This anticyclonic influence will result in a sunny day across most parts of the country, pushing temperatures up significantly."

Andalucia, the southernmost region in Spain, is likely to see the highest temperatures by Sunday, June 23, where it could hit 40C. Then, next week, Madrid will also heat up and reach that high peak by Thursday, June 27, or Friday, June 28, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Elsewhere in the country, Zaragoza could see highs of 40C by the middle of next week, with the heatwave expected to last until at least the end of the month. Seville and Cordoba, which are both in Andalucia, could even see the mercury peaking at 42-43C for an entire week. These high temperatures are expected to cause very warm nights across Spain, staying high above 20C during the night.
