Weather warning issued ahead of thunderstorms and heavy showers

Thunderstorms and heavy showers could lead to disruption across the county over the weekend, according to the Met Office.

A yellow weather warning has been put in place by the Met Office on Sunday, May 12 from 12pm to 10pm.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out in the south by late Sunday morning into the afternoon. The Met Office have warned that some intense downpours could be possible in a few places.

There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to homes and businesses could be lost, as well as a chance of delays and cancellations to train and bus services where flooding or lightning strikes occur.

The Met Office have also warned that spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions as well as possible road closures.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out in the south of this area late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon, moving steadily north whilst growing into larger areas of rain before clearing the area.

"Some intense downpours are possible in a few places, giving up to 30 mm in less than hour and perhaps 40-50 mm over two to three hours leading to surface water flooding.

"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

"Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
