Welcome to Oymyakon, the coldest village in the world, where even people's eyelashes freeze

As the UK sees the return of snow and sub-zero temperatures, it’s nothing compared to Oymyakon – the coldest village in the world.

The village has recorded official lows of -59C in recent days, and this week was hovering anywhere between -40C and -50C.

A new electric thermometer in the village, which sits in the Russian region of Yakutia, dropped to even lower, at -62C, then broke because it was too cold.

Locals said their readings were as low as -67C, less than one degree off the lowest recorded temperature for a permanent settlement anywhere in the world, also recorded in Oymyakon – nown as the ‘Pole of Cold’ – back in 1933.

The below-freezing temperatures froze the eyelashes of locals, and two men reportedly froze to death when they tried to walk to a nearby farm after their car broke down at the weekend.

Despite students routinely going to school in -40C, school has reportedly been cancelled in the region, with police ordering parents to keep their children at home.

But the ice-cold temperatures didn’t stop one group of Chinese tourists from stripping off and bathing in an ice-free spring in the village.
