'He went for it, lol' - Driver describes moment lorry driver smashed into bridge

Drivers have described the moment a trucker brought traffic chaos to a town centre - by crashing into a railway bridge. The trucker had a second lorry on the back of a low-loader when he attempted to get under Anchor Road bridge, in Longton.

But the vehicle was too tall, clattered into the bridge, and sent the lorry on the low-loader toppling onto the carriageway. The collision happened at 10am today - and the road is expected to 'remain closed' for some time.

Laney Wild was directly behind the lorry.

She said: "I was right behind the lorry carrying the lorry and kept my distance because it was pretty obvious that it wasn't going to fit under the bridge. I thought he was going turn right and go down to Longton Police Station but he went for it, lol, and the lorry he was carrying fell off to the other side of the road. I had followed it up from the roundabout at the bottom of the A50. He just went through at normal speed - I was cringing for him. I'm just glad I kept my distance from it because I just knew something was going to happen."

Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service were scrambled to the scene. Anchor Road still remained closed this lunchtime.

Fellow motorist Chris Lewis added: "I saw it on the one-way system and thought it was going turn to go past the police station but it didn't."
