For the second year running, West Herts hospital chief Matthew Coats has been named one of the top 50 NHS CEOs.

Mr Coats joined the West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2022 from a previous role in the Civil Service.

The trust is responsible for Watford General and St Albans and City hospitals.

Trust Chair Phil Townsend said: "I’m delighted to see Matthew’s leadership recognised in this way and its testament to the progress we have made together at West Herts over recent years.

"Matthew has a close connection with the local area and is passionate about offering high quality care, services and facilities to our local community.

"That’s what drives him and motivates him, along with a desire to create a supportive culture which allows colleagues to thrive in their work."

The Health Service Journal, which compiled the list of more than 200 CEOs, praised Mr Coats' work to improve patient care and increase the speed of treatment.

This has surpassed national A&E waiting time targets, including during the busiest months.

Additionally, the Trust's virtual hospital programme, where patients are cared for at home using advanced tech and expert support, has been nationally recognised.

Ambitious plans for state-of-the-art facilities in Watford, St Albans, and Hemel Hempstead area are underway.
