The team at Five Sisters Zoo got their feathers in a flap when they celebrated World Penguin Day this week.

They made their 22 Humboldt penguins the stars of the show today (Thursday) to help educate the world about penguins, the adorable flightless birds of the southern hemisphere that face dangers from melting ice caps and more.

In October last year the West Calder Zoo adopted eight Humboldt penguins from The Cornish Seal Sanctuary, and a further 14 in February this year.

Humboldt penguins are one of 18 penguin species in the world that are listed as vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN.

They live on the rocky coastal shores of Peru and Chile in the wild and face a number of threats such as climate change, over-fishing of their natural food sources, and rising ocean temperatures. This means that these penguins now face dwindling resources, such as food, in their natural habitat.

The zoo said: “We’re on a mission to raise awareness about these flightless birds and are determined to play our part in preserving the species so that future generations are able to see these remarkable animals.”
