If there's one rule of live television that everyone knows, it's do not swear. But in the excitement of winning her Emmy for Best Supporting Actress, this slipped Thandie Newton's mind.

The British actress, who was awarded for her role in HBO's sci-fi hit Westworld last night, accidentally dropped the F-bomb when she took to the stage in her pink Brandon Maxwell gown.

She began her speech: "I don't even believe in God, but I'm going to thank her tonight," before continuing: "I am so blessed, I am so blessed, without this I am even so f**king blessed."

Recognising her mistake, Newton immediately threw her hand over her mouth as the audience cheered.

It's the first Emmy win for the actress, who last year was nominated for the same role as brothel madam Maeve in the series – but lost out to Ann Dowd, who plays Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid's Tale. Newton also picked up the only award for Westworld despite the drama receiving 21 nominations.

So, who can blame her for getting carried away in the moment?

Westworld airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
