Why you should be watching Inside Amy Schumer

Inside Amy Schumer is a sketch comedy series created by Amy Schumer and starring herself. She’s also among the writers and executive producers. The show airs on Comedy Central and each episode includes various sketches, bits from the comedian’s stand-ups, street interviews and a segment called “Amy goes deep” in which Amy interviews people with fascinating or just unusual lives.

The very first sketch of the pilot is a parody of the disgusting “2 girls, 1 cup” video and I remember laughing so hard that my stomach was aching and that’s when I knew, “this show is awesome!”

It reminded me a lot of Louie, a series created by and starring the comedian Louis C. K. in terms of segments and sketches and basically the way the episodes are organized. The two comedians are both hilarious but Amy’s style is less dark and angry than Louis C. K.’s.

In her stand-ups, the actress talks about relationships, sex, feminism, men’s vs women’s approach to life and these are the same themes that Inside Amy Schumer deals with.

The list of guest stars that have appeared on the show so far is pretty long, from Tina Fey to Paul Giamatti, from Jerry Seinfeld to Zach Braff, from Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Amber Rose. The latter co-stars with Amy in one my favourite scene which is a music video that opens the third series. The song is about butts and their true function (it’s pooping, guys) and Warning! it might get stuck in your head as it did in mine after you watch the video:

Another hilarious song from the show is “Girl, you don’t need make up”, a parody sketch inspired by boy bands like One Direction. They start singing about natural beauty and how Amy would look better without make-up on, but as soon as they see her clean face they kind of regret their advice and urge her to put her make-up back on cause “girl, I can’t be seen with the ghost from The Ring”.

The best part about Amy’s sketches is that they are meant to make us laugh as well as make us think about what’s wrong with our society. The parody song led to an incredibly strong response with women tweeting pictures of themselves make-up free and Amy then replying:

Furthermore, the song won a Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics (only one of the countless awards the actress has received in 2015).

Another perfect example is the sketch “Ask if birth control is right for you” in which Amy is forced to ask for everyone’s approval (literally everyone from her boss to complete strangers she meets on the street and finally the Supreme Court) before she can start taking the contraceptive pill, while at the end of the sketch we see a little boy asking for a gun which is immediately given to him without any question. With a single sketch she’s drawn the attention to two of the problems that afflict America: women who are not free to choose what’s right for their body and gun control laws.

Amy is well known for speaking the truth not matter what, for being unapologetic of who she is and how she chooses to live her life and that’s what I love most about her.

She seems unstoppable, taking over the world one dirty joke at a time. I can’t wait to see what this fourth season of her show has in store for us. While we wait for the second episode, let’s drink it up!
