Wi-Fi already connects us to an entire online universe of information, but a new system could actually use Wi-Fi to charge your gadgets through the air.

Developed by a team at the Univerity of Washington, the 'power over Wi-Fi' system - PoWiFi for short - is capable of recharging batteries from up to 28 feet (8.5m) away.

PoWiFi captures and makes use of the tiny amount of power that Wi-Fi uses to send data.

Technology already exists that sends power over Wi-Fi signals, but the new PoWiFi system claims to use only existing hardware without the need for any complicated gadgets, and transmits both power and data in the same signal.

The system has already been tested out in six Seattle homes with positive results.

The 'Internet of Things' - the catch-all term for web-connected gadgets - is on the rise, and with it the amount of connected gadgets that also need to be charged.

If successful, the technology could mean the end of multiple gadget chargers and overloaded plug points.
