Wolves set to bank summer windfall as part of £118m benefit

Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to bank a useful sum of money this summer for allowing Portuguese trio Pedro Neto, Nelson Semedo and Jose Sa to represent their country at Euro 2024. UEFA's Club Benefits Programme is designed to ensure that clubs around Europe who green light their players' availability in international tournaments are compensated.

UEFA have set aside a pot of £118m this summer, to be divided up per player, per day that they spend in Germany as part of an international squad. Players will earn their clubs thousands of pounds each day for participating in the Euros, even if they don't play a single minute.

It's estimated that each player being a part of their side's group stage, from the day they arrive at the training camp up to the day of the final group game - they are taking place this week - will earn their club in the region of £140,000. For Wolves, they have three players in the Portugal squad.

Neto came off the bench on matchday one and assisted Francisco Conceicao's last minute winner against the Czech Republic. He also appeared, along with former Wolves teammate Ruben Neves, as a half time substitute in the 3-0 victory over Turkey on Saturday evening. Defender Semedo has also been introduced in both games from the bench, although Sa, like Rui Patricio, has been behind Portugal's first choice keeper Diogo Costa so far.

They play Georgia in their final group game on Wednesday, but with their place in the next round of the tournament already confirmed having collected six points from their opening two matches, Wolves will continue to earn for as long as the Portuguese - who are fifth favourites to win the Euros - remain in Germany. They'll be on course to earn up towards half a million pounds as things stand, with that sum set to continue rising beyond the groups stages.
