Woman pleads guilty to manslaughter in Christmas Day homicide in Saskatoon

A 20-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of Tyla Whitebird on Christmas Day last year in Saskatoon.

Vianna Moberly entered her plea in Saskatoon provincial court on Tuesday. She was originally charged with second-degree murder, but that count was stayed when Moberly entered the guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Moberly's sentencing is set for Aug. 7.

Whitebird, 20, died on Dec. 25, 2023. A cyclist found her body the following day in the city's southwest industrial area near Holiday Park Golf Course.

Police arrested Moberly within 48 hours and said the two women knew each other.

Whitebird's death was Saskatoon's 12th and final homicide in 2023. So far in 2024, there have been 11 homicides in the city.

Moberly also pleaded guilty to one count of arson in an unrelated matter. She remains in custody.
