A woman has died after being hit by a car on a motorway slip road.

Emergency services were called at around 12.30am this morning, Tuesday, April 9, to the M6 motorway following reports of a crash between junction 21 near Warrington and junction 21A for the M62 Croft Interchange.

Cheshire Police said officers came across the crash involving a white car. Shortly after they discovered a 52-year-old woman, from Stoke-on-Trent, had been hit by a car on the M6 to the M62 slip road. A spokesperson for the force confirmed the woman was walking on the slip road.

Attempts to save the woman were carried out, but despite officers’ best efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene at 1.14am. A 52-year-old man from Preston was been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The motorway was closed for more than nine hours as emergency services dealt with the incident. Diversions were put in place and there were reports of long queues. All lanes have since reopened and traffic has cleared.
