Walking is not only a simple and cost-free activity, but also an effective way to get fit, shed pounds, and boost overall health, as endorsed by the NHS.

It might not immediately spring to mind as a calorie-burning exercise, yet the effectiveness of walking hinges on the duration, intensity, and your dietary habits. For digital content creator Annie, committing to a daily goal of 20,000 steps has significantly transformed her physique, a change she eagerly shared with her online followers.

On TikTok, @fitannie documented her weight loss journey through walking, posting a recent video that showcased her before-and-after progress from walking 20,000 steps for 30 consecutive days. Initially, Annie presented a comparison of her legs from 30 days prior to their appearance after a month.

"I'm so shocked, I don't know about you but I think 30 days is insane for that kind of result," the influencer expressed. She added: "I'm so happy that I took these pictures because I couldn't see it in the mirror."

Following this, Annie demonstrated how a pair of tight jeans she wore a month ago now hang loosely around her waist. "I lost around 4kg in the last 30 days but I'm also pretty sure that I also gained some muscle from walking that much," she elaborated.

In addition to her step-counting regimen, Annie was mindful to maintain a 'healthy' diet throughout the month. She explained: "I didn't count calories or anything like that, just tried to eat healthy."

However, Annie admitted that hitting such a high number of steps daily was "stressful" and she's planning to scale back to around 10,000 steps per day. She remarked: "I think this is proof that walking a lot leans out your legs, right? Nonetheless I will go back to aiming for 10,000-15,000 steps a day now, since this has also been a bit stressful, not gonna lie. I want walking to be fun and not feel like a chore."

Annie's transformation amazed many, with one individual commenting: "The gasped that I gasped seeing the jeans before and after!" Another said: "The difference is really huge! Amazing work! You look incredible, congratulations."

When queried about how long it takes her to walk 20,000 steps, Annie explained: "Around 3 hours in one go, but I just incorporated walking throughout my whole day and split it up."

The NHS recommends 150 minutes of exercise each week for good health, noting that even a brisk 10-minute walk each day can offer "lots of health benefits". They describe a brisk pace as "about three miles an hour, which is faster than a stroll".

They also note that weight loss is likely if you consume fewer calories than you use, a principle known as creating a calorie deficit. For reference, they suggest that an average man needs 2,500 calories and an average woman requires 2,000 calories a day to maintain their current weight.

Many individuals strive to achieve the goal of 10,000 steps a day, with research indicating this can help ease symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, you don't need to hit this target to enjoy the benefits.

A study published in JAMA Neurology discovered that for every extra 2,000 steps walked daily, the risk of premature death can be reduced.
