A wonderful gesture has been made as a rival pub has set up a fundraiser for the fire-ravaged Cottage Inn. The historic pub in Fillongley was left severely damaged after a fire tore through the 18th century building on Friday morning.

It has left its heartbroken owners unsure of when they will be able to re-open again. Support has poured in for the pub and now a GoFundMe page has been set-up to help the owners.

It has been created Kath Walsh, who runs the Weavers Arms, which is also based in the village on the outskirts of Coventry. In it, she explains she was inspired to help her competitor due to the kindness the owners have shown to her.

"I would like to fundraise for an amazing family who unfortunately has lost all their possessions, business and livelihood in a devastating fire at their pub/home in Fillongley," the fund-raiser reads.

"Since I came to the village only a few weeks ago Luke came and introduced himself to me and made me feel welcome and supported even tho (sic) I am his competitor, anything I needed help with he was there and I’m sure he hasn’t just helped me but many others.

"I would like to repay the favour and raise some money so him, his partner and little one can get the essentials they need to get them through the next few weeks at this difficult time."

In less than 24 hours, more than £1,000 has been donated towards the £5,000 target. Anyone who would like to make a donation can visit the page online here
