Woody Harrelson has angered Saturday Night Live viewers by including Covid conspiracy theory jokes in his opening monologue.

The Hollywood star hosted Saturday's episode and took on the traditional duty of a joke-packed opening speech - but it fell flat with many viewers as he shared some controversial opinions on the pandemic.

Harrelson said: "So the movie goes like this: The biggest drug cartels in the world get together and buy up all the media and all the politicians and force all the people in the world to stay locked in their homes. And people can only come out if they take the cartel’s drugs and keep taking them over and over.

"I threw the script away. I mean, who was going to believe that crazy idea? Being forced to do drugs? I do that voluntarily all day."

Plenty of viewers were not amused, as one tweeted: "So Woody Harrelson uses his SNL monologue to push his hostility to Covid vaccines? Really?"

Someone else added: "Woody Harrelson sounding like an antivaxxer."

Another person wrote: "Thank you, @nbcsnl, for Woody Harrelson's insipid anti-vax monologue. Who are going to have guest host next week, Scott Baio? Rob Schneider? Kevin Sorbo? Maybe invite Kanye back while you're at it."

One viewer commented: "Woody Harrelson’s monologue was the least funny I think I’ve ever heard on #SNL."

The actor has previously criticised mask wearing, suggested that 5G was responsible for the spread of the virus, and claimed he didn't get Covid because he was "internally clean" thanks to his vegan diet.

One viewer tweeted: "It’s such an incredibly selfish & privileged position, the anti-vax, anti-lockdown, covid conspiracy one. Woody Harrelson, & those supporting such bs, are only able to do so because they themselves are ok. Nobody who suffered or lost loved ones to Covid talks like that."

Someone else asked: "So SNL is just cool with Woody Harrelson doing an anti-vax opening monologue?"

Another shocked viewer added: "Did Woody Harrelson just have a huge monologue set up to make an antivax conspiracy joke on @nbcsnl? That was bizarre and awful."
