An ITV World Cup commentator has completely baffled viewers by using Mel Giedroyc as an, er, official form of measurement. Yes, it is as weird as it sounds.

"Mel from Mel and Sue" is apparently the same height as a football player.

During the Argentina v Iceland clash yesterday (June 16), commentator Sam Matterface seemingly ran out of interesting facts to tell viewers, so he compared the height of Cristian Pavón to former Great British Bake Off host Mel Giedroyc.

The Argentina player – who we all now know is 5'5" tall – replaced teammate Angel Di Maria for the final 15 minutes of the game when Matterface made the odd comparison.

He said: "He's only five foot, five inches tall, which is the same height as Kirsten Dunst and Mel from Mel and Sue."

There is a lot to talk about during the World Cup, there's quite a lot that goes on – including Robbie Williams giving everyone the finger – so what we want to know, is how that sort of research came about?

Well, some viewers thought it was a rather strange thing to say – with former Hollyoaks star Danny Mac believing he'd lost a bet.

In case you were wondering, the football game resulted in a 1-1 draw. There's an actual interesting fact for you.
