The seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, often referred to as Saltburn, has been named the UK's top staycation spot for 2024.

As the weather starts to improve, many are beginning to plan their holidays and it seems you don't have to travel far in the UK to find an intriguing destination. Located in North Yorkshire, Saltburn recently gained attention due to a popular psychological thriller film released last year bearing its name.

However, the town is worth visiting for its own unique charm. Situated on cliffs overlooking a golden sandy beach with views of the North Sea, it's an ideal location for photography or leisurely strolls.

Exuding Victorian charm, Saltburn offers a unique way to reach the beach via the Saltburn Cliff Lift. This water-powered funicular railway, built in 1884, runs up and down the cliffs between the town and the beach.

Not only is it a historical landmark being the oldest water-powered funicular railway in the world, but it also provides passengers with stunning views of the surrounding area without the need for a strenuous cliffside walk, according to the Express, reports the Mirror.

Another notable feature of Saltburn is its pier. Built in 1869 and having undergone numerous enhancements over the years, it's now one of the best spots to enjoy some fish and chips or ice cream while taking in the beautiful scenery.

No trip to the seaside is complete without indulging in some fish and chips, and it's said that the best in town can be found at the Seaview Restaurant. This eatery not only serves up delicious food but also supports local fishermen who are part of the Responsible Fishing Scheme, helping to protect marine wildlife.

Saltburn Pier is a must-visit spot for wildlife enthusiasts, with dolphins, seals and even basking sharks spotted there on occasion. For those looking to explore, Saltburn has plenty to offer.

One unique attraction is the Saltburn Miniature Railway, which runs from the beach through a woodland valley, offering stunning views of the town's natural beauty.

The Valley Gardens is an ideal spot for a picnic or a leisurely stroll, boasting colourful flower displays, ornamental ponds and scenic walking routes. If you're after a sweet treat, the Valley Garden Victorian Tearooms serve up a range of homemade cakes and ice cream during the summer months.

Every second Saturday, the local farmer's market opens its doors, selling everything from local crafts and artwork to tasty local produce. But remember to plan your visit to Saltburn in advance, as the town hosts a number of fun festivals throughout the year, including a Food Festival, Arts Festival, Folk and Music Festivals, and even a Surf Festival and Beer Festival.

Saltburn is causing a stir with its distinctive Victorian weekend event, where the town embodies its past with residents wearing period attire, and entertainment consisting of street performances, horse-drawn carriages, and antique markets. This is an historical celebration that simply can't be overlooked.

The Sun has awarded Saltburn as the top seaside spot for 2024, applauding its quiet ambience in comparison to more bustling coastal towns.

Adding to Saltburn's growing list of commendations, it has been elected as one of the most beautiful places to visit in the UK this year and won "best town for a seaside staycation in 2024" from Simply Seaviews. The enchanting and historic town offers a range of activities and attractions, ensuring a pleasant seafront retreat whenever you choose to visit.
