A yellow weather warning has been issued for thunderstorms across Yorkshire today.

The Met Office has issued the weather warning, which lasts from 1pm today to 9pm in the evening. It warns of thunderstorms and heavy downpours, which could cause flooding in some areas.

This weather warning extends all the way from the Scottish Highlands to Central Wales and includes most of Yorkshire, except for the east coast. Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Doncaster, Sheffield and York are all included within the boundaries of the warning.

According to the Met Office, you can expect spray, sudden flooding, delays or cancellations to bus and train services and the slight chance of power cuts. There is also a small chance of rapid flooding and fast flowing floodwater.

The Met Office said: "Thunderstorms and heavy downpours are likely to break out in some places this afternoon and evening. Although not all places will catch these storms and downpours, where they do occur 20 to 40 mm rain may fall in some places in an hour or two."

As a result of this warning, the Met Office has warned people to consider preparing a flood plan if they are at risk of flash flooding and to check road conditions before driving. You should also prepare for power cuts.

If you are caught in thunder while outside, you can protect yourself by finding and enclosed shelter such as a car. You should not shelter near trees or other structures which could be struck by lightning, and you should move to lower ground if you are in an elevated area.
