Yorkshire Vet's Peter Wright was seen to face some unexpected difficulties on Tuesday's episode while handling a particularly sensitive task on the farm of Jean and Steve Green.

As part of his visit, Wright was given the responsibility of disbudding the Greens' calves, a process which requires the destruction of the horn-producing tissue around the horn bud in young calves.

Standing on their farm and discussing the process for Channel 5 viewers, Wright asserted: "It's a job that's better done now."

Yet, a noticeable issue with his disbudder soon emerged. Upon his initial investigation, he found the machine had been tightened excessively, preventing the release of gas from the canister.

To compound matters, Wright soon discovered a hole in the tube through which gas was leaking.

Expressing his concern for the risky situation, he said: "If I set fire, the whole building could go. I'm going to have to abandon the job, I'm going to have to get this sorted out."

Bewildered by the unprecedented incident, he exclaimed: "In 40-odd years, it's something that's never happened to me before, never!"

Despite their obvious disappointment at the delay, Steve acknowledged the risk and understandingly agreed to halt the operation for safety concerns.

Taking full responsibility for the debacle, a regretful Peter admitted to the cameras: "It's my fault, I've turned up with faulty equipment!"

Once far from the barn, the weight of the mistake seemed to finally hit the esteemed vet as he registered his astonishment at arriving without the necessary, properly-functioning equipment.

He admitted: "I'm very embarrassed to turn up to Mrs Green when my equipment isn't up to scratch."

As the episode progressed, viewers saw the vet repairing his apparatus so he could return to service the Greens' farm.

Despite his earlier concerns and a quip about having the car ready for a swift exit should things go awry, he breathed a sigh of relief when the machine finally ignited.

Yet, during the calf disbudding process, Peter encountered another setback as the intense heat from the machine inadvertently burned through his overalls.

With the calf secured between his knees, Peter revealed to Jean and Steve the scorched hole in his garment.

The farmers checked on his well-being and then burst into laughter at the mishap, especially given the earlier troubles with the equipment.

Ultimately, Peter completed the task successfully, leaving Jean and Steve satisfied with the outcome.

The Yorkshire Vet airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 5.
