YouTuber Alfie Deyes apologises for insensitive £1 food challenge video
A YouTuber has apologised for a patronising food poverty challenge.
Uber rich Alfie Deyes, boyfriend of blogger Zoella, shared a video setting himself the challenge of living off just £1 per day.
In a rather insensitive move to those who endure food poverty, wealthy Alfie complains how difficult it is to maintain a healthy diet on a minuscule budget – while enjoying personal training sessions, driving a luxury car and not restricting his spending in any other area of his life.
Understandably, there was a hefty backlash against his food poverty challenge and Alfie, who earns around a million pounds a year through YouTube, has since deleted the video and shared another to apologise.
He said: ‘I messed up really bad… This is a very big deal and I’ve made a massive mistake here. When I made the video, as you can see from watching it, I didn’t think about charity. I don’t know how, looking back on it I have no idea how I didn’t think about it.
“People have been calling me ignorant and I get that.”
In the original clip, Alfie goes for a trip to Waitrose to simulate a food poverty shop, musing that he “can’t be healthy when living on a pound”.
He also claims free doughnuts from Krispy Kreme, before buying a T-shirt, some jewellery and a comb designed to detangle beards – naturally, not from his £1 budget.
He later goes back to Tesco, while not counting the petrol or car tax etc in his budget, and buys a macaroni cheese ready meal for 20p.
Alfie claims that all revenue made from the video will be donated to charity.
