11-Year-Old Girl Dies at Hospital, Becoming 6th Sibling to Die After Indiana House Fire

A sixth child has died after a massive fire tore through an Indiana home earlier this month.

A family friend confirmed that 11-year-old Angel Smith died at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis on Friday, five days after the blaze took place, according to The South Bend Tribune and ABC affiliate WRTV. Angel’s death was also confirmed by the Marion County Coroner’s Office on Monday, according to the Associated Press.

The girl was in “critical condition” as of Wednesday, two days before her death, the South Bend Fire Department said in a news release obtained by PEOPLE.

Five other children were killed in the fire that began at 222 North LaPorte Avenue in South Bend “in the early evening,” according to a previous news release from the fire department.

The department has since identified the victims as three boys — Demetris Smith, 10, Deontay Smith, 5, and D’Angelo Smith, 4 — and two girls, Davida Smith, 9 and Faith Smith, 17 months.

A vigil for the children was held at the site of the deadly blaze on Sunday, one week after the tragic incident, according to the Tribune and NBC affiliate WNDU-TV. Members of the community comforted the child's father at the event.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Officials said the children’s father attempted to save his kids, but was unable to get through the heavy flames, according to CBS affiliate WBBM-TV.

The father sustained minor injuries the night of the fire, per the SBFD. Two firefighters were also injured: one was burned while the other fell through a hole in the second floor and landed on the first floor.

The home involved in the fire previously failed a safety inspection, according to the Tribune. The Housing Authority of South Bend previously removed a tenant from the building after repairs were not made in 30 days, Director Marsha Parham-Green said.

The owner of WJM Property Management told the newspaper that the repairs had been made to the building. The management company did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the SBFD said.

The department also said it is "committed to providing support to these families during this difficult time and is working closely with local & State authorities to investigate the cause of the fire."
