The 38 Hull and East Riding roads set for pothole repairs - paid from HS2 cash pot
Nearly 40 roads across Hull and the East Riding are due receive pothole repairs and other works, with funding coming from a government transport pot, it was announced today.
Six roads in Hull and 32 in the East Riding are to benefit from improvements over the the next 12 months, financed by a share of repurposed HS2 funding. The roads include Derrigham Street and Orchard Park Road in Hull, Flemingate in Beverley and the A164 Minster Way.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the Government would invest £991m in local road repairs across Yorkshire and the Humber over the next 11 years and claimed that this represented the largest ever funding increase. Simon Williams, of the RAC, called on councils to use the cash to carry out vital dressing works to stop cracking in the winter, which leads to potholes forming.

In Hull, the works are expected to include new traffic-calming measures outside schools and improvements for bus passengers on one busy route, alongside the road repairs. In the East Riding, footpath and bridge repairs will be included in the package.
Councils are required to publish the list of roads as part of the funding agreement, in order to ensure that local people can see that the money is being spent on repairs. Updates on the progress of works must be given every three months, beginning in June.
Mr Harper claimed that such measures would ensure that people could hold local authorities to account. "We’re on the side of drivers, which is why this Government is getting on with delivering our plan to invest £991m in Yorkshire and the Humber as part of the biggest ever funding increase for local road improvements, made possible by reallocated HS2 funding," the Transport Secretary said.
Mr Williams, the RAC's head of policy, said it was very encouraging to see councils set out which roads would be repaired. He said: "Drivers will be pleased to see potholes fixed and roads resurfaced, especially as our research shows the poor state of local carriageways is their number- one concern.
"We hope councils will also use this extra money to carry out vital surface dressing work which helps prevent cracking in the cold winter months by sealing roads against water ingress. The prime time for this life-extending work is between April and September, so time is of the essence."
