Four bakeries crowned among the best you can find in the UK

Four bakeries/pastry shops located in Brighton and Hove were named among the best in the UK by the French ranking and restaurant guide La Liste.

The Flour Pot Bakery, Julien Plumart and Real Patisserie in Brighton plus Sugardough in Hove were included.

La Liste had revealed the 2024 edition of the Pastry Special Awards which saw 25 winners of the 10 award pastry categories.

Only Darcie Maher’s Lannan in Edinburgh won an award from the UK, but as part of the awards, 3,000 of the best pastry shops and bakeries worldwide were also collated, which can be seen in an interactive map on the La Liste app.

La Liste shared: "Introducing the world’s first comprehensive list of pastry shops using a similar methodology to restaurants, the list encompasses the crème de la crème of pastry shops, bakeries, coffee shops, Afternoon teas, desert restaurants in more than 80 countries."

In total, 198 of the 3,000 best pastry shops and bakeries were located in the UK, with four of those being in Brighton and Hove.

The Flour Pot Bakery

The Flour Pot Bakery has a few locations across Brighton, Hove and Worthing, and offers a range of bread, pastries and sandwiches.

On their website, it says: "At The Flour Pot Bakery, we’re passionate about providing artisan baked goods, that are hand made in Brighton with skill and passion by people who care."

It adds: "All of our coffee is responsibly sourced and roasted in Brighton by our sister company, The Milk Shed Coffee Roasters."

Julien Plumart

Described as "a little slice of France in the heart of Brighton" Julien Plumart has been well-received by customers.

Its website adds: "From award-winning pastries to intricate French patisserie, macarons, savouries and celebration cakes, everything is made by hand from scratch every single day, using the best ingredients available and following classic, tried-and-tested recipes – always with a playful Julien Plumart twist which customers have come to know and love."

Real Patisserie

Real Patisserie is another company that has a few locations dotted around Brighton and Hove.

Founded by Paris-trained patissier Alastair Gourlay and his wife Annie, the bakery is said to be "born out of a love of quality ingredients and authentic baking".

Its website adds: "While our range and reach has grown over the years, what hasn't changed is the respect that goes into every loaf. Or our commitment to charging an honest price for honest bread."

Sugardough

Sugardough makes a wide variety of items, including pies, homemade tarts, croissants and more.

Its website adds: "In our traditional bakery in Hove you can watch everything being made from scratch naturally and savour the evocative, mouth-watering aromas of freshly-baked pastries, bread and cakes."

Customers can have the option to eat in or takeaway breakfast and lunch items, as there are a few tables situated in the venue.

One reviewer wrote: "This place is a little treasure! The pastries were amazing! Something traditional with added extras to make a fry-up wrapped up in pastry!! How could it possibly go wrong! Plus a little sweet treat for later that was just delicious! 10/10!"

Another shared: "What an amazing bakery. We are so pleased to have found this wonderful place. The bread loaves are beautifully baked, the multigrain is perfect and makes perfect toast and sandwiches."
