£5,000 warning for cyclists over the bank holiday
With the weather starting to get more sunny spells, more drivers are swapping out their vehicles for bicycles.
However, experts are warning that the incorrect use of bicycle equipment could see cyclists landed with a fine worth up to £5,000. Piotr Sawuła, motoring expert from autoDNA, warned that cyclists should make themselves aware of the legal requirements when making use of a bike rack.
While the humble bike rack is a convenient option for transporting your two wheels, there are legal obligations centred around safety and visibility.

Mr Sawuła said: "As the summer unfolds and the allure of outdoor cycling trips grows stronger, don't let a hefty fine ruin your plans. Staying informed and adhering to bike rack regulations will not only save you money but also ensure the safety of all road users. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy your summer adventures with peace of mind."
The legal requirements for using a bike rack
In order to avoid any potential penalties when transporting a bike, you should be aware of the following:
Number Plate Visibility
It's crucial that your vehicle's number plate remains fully visible when using a bike rack. If the rack obscures your number plate, you'll need to attach an additional one to the rack.
Light Obstruction
Similarly, all lights - brake lights, indicators, and rear lights - must not be hidden by the bike rack or bicycles. If any of these lights are blocked, a light board attached to the bike rack is necessary.
Secure Attachment
Make sure that both your bike rack and bicycles are securely fastened to your vehicle. Loose attachments can be a serious hazard to other road users and could lead to accidents, resulting in hefty fines and liability.
Load Limits
Stick to the manufacturer's load limits for both your vehicle and the bike rack. Overloading can affect your vehicle's handling, heightening the risk of accidents.
Proper Use
Always use the bike rack as per the manufacturer's instructions. Incorrect use can cause damage or detachment while on the move.
