A303 diversion routes as serious crash closes road for hours

The A303 is set to be closed for most of this evening following a serious crash. A crash on the A303 at Chicklade has closed the road in both directions between Wylye and Fonthill Bishop, in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Police, Fire and Ambulance Services are on scene. National Highways are also on the scene, and they said that infomation from scene indicates this closure will remain in place until at least late evening.

If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time, they said. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.

Diversion Routes

Road users are advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol on eastbound road signs:

  • Exit the A303 on to the A350 towards Warminster

  • At the roundabout with the A36, take the 3rd exit on to the A36

  • Follow the A36 through Knook and Codford St Mary, rejoin the A303 at Deptford

Road users are advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol on westbound road signs:

  • Follow the above route, in reverse

Amesbury Police in a statement said: “Drivers please be aware that the A303 near Tisbury is closed in both directions between the junctions for the A350 and A36 following a serious RTC. The road will be closed for the foreseeable future. Please find alternate routes.”

National Highways has warned drivers of a long road closure, with advice on the diversions. It said: "#A303 is closed in both directions between the #A36 (#Deptford) and #A350 (#EastKnoyle / #Chicklade) due to a serious collision."

Roads and traffic monitoring site Inrix first reported the crash at 3.45pm. It said: "A303 in both directions closed, heavy traffic due to accident investigation work from Wylye turn off (Wylye) to Fonthill Bishop turning (Chicklade)."

It is not known at what time the road will reopen. Emergency services have been contacted for more information.
