Award-winning north-east baker Murdoch Allan has secured a deal with Morrisons supermarkets to stock its new Dundee Roll in its stores.

The Aberdeenshire-headquartered firm launched the bread roll last month to celebrate its expansion into Dundee to support its growth throughout Scotland.

The deal with Morrisons will also help to create job opportunities at the new Dundee base in Southern Road.

Murdoch Allan already supplies most Scottish supermarket chains in Scotland with baked and confectionary goods.

These include its Aberdeen Butteries, award-winning pies, and sweet treats such as yum yums, cream cookies, doughnuts, apple turnovers and, for a limited time during spring and summer, strawberry tarts.

Murdoch Allan’s Managing Director, Paul Allan, said: "We’re proud of the long-standing relationship we’ve built with Morrisons and are delighted that they’ve agreed to put the Dundee Roll onto their shelves.

"We think customers will love this addition to their bakery options. The roll is slightly larger than an average bread roll, lightly and fluffy on the inside with a fantastic crunch on the outside – making it perfect for lunch and hot breakfast rolls.

"There’s no better feeling than walking down the supermarket aisle and seeing our range of products that have been baked by our teams in Aberdeen and Dundee who are completely committed to quality and taste."

The initial agreement with Morrisons will see the Dundee Roll available in stores from Dundee to Peterhead. It is also available in independent shops throughout Dundee and in Murdoch Allan’s own bakery outlets in Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen.

Paul hopes the Dundee Roll will become as synonymous with Dundee as the Murdoch Allan’s Aberdeen Buttery’s links to the Granite City.

He said: "First came our Aberdeen buttery, now our Dundee roll! We’ve had a warm welcome since expanding our operations into Dundee. It’s great to see the ovens firing and the production line slowly getting busier again.

"Bread rolls have been produced at our Dundee bakery for more than 50 years so it seemed only fitting to dedicate a roll to the city where they are made."

Murdoch Allan’s move into Dundee marks its first location outside Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. The acquisition protected nine jobs and is expected to create 10 more jobs, supporting the economic growth of the local area.

Murdoch Allan, which is headquartered in Hatton, Aberdeenshire, employs more than 150 people and has outlets in Hatton, Peterhead, Turriff, Fraserburgh, and Mintlaw, as well as Thains in Aberdeen.

As well as supplying most major supermarkets, it also supplies several independent shops across the north east of Scotland.

The company supplies Asda, Aldi, Coop Local, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s with its sought-after Aberdeen butteries, morning rolls, and other baked goods to shelves across stores nationwide.
