Alex Rodriguez popped the question with a stunning diamond ring in March. Now it’s his long-forgotten answer to a question he wasn’t specifically asked that has Jennifer Lopez beaming with love.

The former New York Yankees slugger was taken down memory lane with footage from 1998, when he was in his fifth MLB season with the Seattle Mariners.

MLB Network’s “International Talk” aired forgotten footage Tuesday night from 1998 when the shortstop was only 23. As any young person would, Rodriguez thinks big and specific when asked about a date.

Reporter: “What would a dream date with Alex Rodriguez be?”

Rodriguez: “Jennifer Lopez. Hopefully you can find me a date with her.”

An interesting note here: Rodriguez isn’t asked who his dream date would be. He’s asked what it would be. It’s like asking what a dream proposal would look like, which for Rodriguez was also wild.

Lopez responds 21 years later

A lot has changed since that video, starting with Rodriguez’s hat style and ending with his dream come true. Rodriguez and Lopez originally met in 2005, when he was with the Yankees and Lopez came to a game. Both were married at the time.

They weren’t in early 2017 when they ran into each other and shared a first date that Rodriguez didn’t think was a date. It’s odd when your dreams come true.

Rodriguez shared the video on his Instagram account overnight with “I just had a feeling” and a laughing-crying emoji.

Lopez replied not an hour later: “OMG ... i love this too much” with three hearts.

He told us. He really did.
