Supermarket shoppers have been warned to check their freezers for a popular product that has been pulled from stores due to it being unsafe to eat.

Asian-inspired food brand Itsu has issued a recall for its Sizzling Pork Gyoza, which are sold in Asda and Sainsbury's stores, because they may contain small pieces of plastic. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned customers who have purchased the affected product not to eat it, in an alert issued on Thursday, May 2.

However, while the FSA usually instructs shoppers to return recalled products to the store from which they were bought to receive a full refund, the advice for this product differs due to Itsu being a separate brand. Instead, customers have been told to send a picture of the best before date on their packaging to the company in order to get their money back, before disposing of it.

The best before date can be found on the reverse side of the packaging, and only 240g packs of Sizzling Pork Gyoza with a date of March 8, 2025 are affected by the recall. Shoppers can contact Itsu via email at customerservice@itsugrocery.com, or write to them at Itsu (grocery), Partnership House, Carlisle Place, London, SW1P 1BX.

Itsu said in a statement to customers: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation." For more information, shoppers can contact Itsu customer service on 0333 224 9510.

This is the latest food recall to have been issued by the FSA, following a separate alert last month to Waitrose customers over a dairy product that may contain pieces of blue cloth. The supermarket pulled its 500g Essential Waitrose & Partners Salted Dairy Butter due to the possible issue, with shoppers urged not to eat it and instead return it to store for a full refund - packs with a best before date of June 19, 2024 were affected.
