In approximately five weeks (July 28), Steelers players will report to St. Vincent College for yet another year of training camp at the historic venue in Latrobe, Pa.

The first open practice will take place on Friday, July 29.

Will you be there for the first practice? Will you be there for multiple practices? Will you show-up to any of the open practices before camp officially breaks around the third week of August?

If you’re one of those Steelers faithful who considers the annual night practices at Latrobe Memorial Stadium more exciting, maybe you’ll be there well before the 7 p.m. horn sounds on August 5.

Maybe watching Steelers-on-Steelers practices isn’t for you. If that’s the case, you’ll have a chance to see a joint practice with the Lions on Wednesday, August 10–or two days before the teams meet for the first preseason game on Friday, August 12, at Heinz Field.

Do you think there will be fights at this joint practice? Yeah, me too.

The Steelers have held their training camp in Latrobe every summer since 1967. And once Pittsburgh started winning Super Bowls in the 1970s, it become a tradition for thousands upon thousands of fans to travel from far and wide just to watch their favorite football players practice.

Honestly, even though I began following the Steelers religiously in 1980, I never could bring myself to make the hour-long journey from Pittsburgh to Latrobe. But in 2009, I was involved in a pretty serious relationship with a young woman. And when you’re in a relationship, you have to relationship things. In my case, a man and a die-hard Steelers fan for almost 30 years, this meant doing something that shouldn’t have required prodding from a member of the fairer sex.

Sadly, prodding was required, but I’m glad we went. This was the summer after the Steelers won their record sixth Super Bowl, so as you might imagine, the crowd was really huge and in a celebratory mood. The six Lombardi trophies were on-display, and we even got some close-up pictures of two of the heroes from Super Bowl XLIII: Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes.

While sitting in the stands at Chuck Noll Field (a site dedicated to the legendary coach who, four decades earlier, helped build a football dynasty that led to the universal love the team enjoys today), we encountered a man who traveled from Minnesota for the specific purpose of watching a few days of Steelers training camp.

As I wandered around the area during and after practice and took everything in, I was awed by the fact that I was walking the same hallowed grounds as legends the caliber of Mean Joe Greene, Franco Harris, Jack Lambert, Mel Blount, Rod Woodson and Jerome Bettis.

My old girlfriend and I went back to training camp in 2010 and again in 2011, but I haven’t been back there since.

I think it’s time I visit those hallowed practice grounds again this summer.
