Boxing club celebrates opening of new home in Petts Wood

A boxing club with a rich history has opened the doors to its brand new home in Petts Wood.

The Orpington & District amateur boxing club in Petts Wood was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor of Bromley on May 17.

Cllr Jonathan Andrews took a keen interest in the club's history, according to a representative from the club - particularly regarding Lord Avery (Eric Lubbock MP), who served as the club's president in the 1960s.

He was shown the stories of various champions that the club has nurtured over the years, a testament to its commitment to local boxing talents.

Orpington & District Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) was started in 1962 by Alf Reilly at St Joseph's Boys School in Orpington.

Coached by Peter Hughes and Ted Norris from the club's launch in 1962 until 1977, the club quickly gained a reputation as one of the best in Kent and London.

The club produced acclaimed national champions such as Mick Spencer, Johnny Hillman, Robert Mullholland, Jimmy Cable, Albert Hillman, Alan Cable and Ray Mason, among others.

The new venue is now located in Chatsworth Parade, following a brief hiatus for a change of location.

Oliver Watson, the club secretary and a former boxer, believes the club will not only continue its legacy of producing champions, but also serve as an essential hub for the local community.

During the visit, the deputy mayor engaged with coaches, boxers and their families and found evidence of their passion and commitment to the sport.

He also liaised with Oliver, gaining insights into the operations and future plans of the club.

He was encouraged by the club's ambition to revive the closed Spitfire ABC club in Biggin Hill, reflecting the aspiration to expand boxing opportunities in the area.

A spokesperson for the club said: “The Orpington & District amateur boxing club is poised to become a pillar of athletic achievement and community engagement in Petts Wood and beyond.

“As the club continues its journey, it is sure to inspire future generations of talented boxers and foster a sense of camaraderie among its members.”

The club has signed a 15-year lease for its new venue in Petts Wood and hopes to bolster the local amateur boxing scene and continue nurturing talent.
