Candidate decided to stand against Clive Lewis after ‘breastfeeding incident’

A Norfolk MP candidate says she is running for election in order to challenge an opponent on his "views on women".

Linda Law, who is representing the Party of Women in Norwich South, said she chose the constituency to confront Labour candidate Clive Lewis about comments he made on social media in support of transwomen breastfeeding babies.

However, Mrs Law says she has been unable to make contact with Mr Lewis and was not invited to a recent hustings event at the University of East Anglia Students' Union, where she hoped to open a discussion into the topic of women's rights.

Mr Lewis faced criticism last year after signing a petition in support of Mika Minio-Paluello, who was born male and appeared on ITV's News At Ten to speak about how rising water bills were "tough if you're a mum" before posting online about breastfeeding.

A small number of transwomen in the UK have reportedly undergone a course of treatment to help artificially produce milk but some experts have urged caution over the nutritional value and the long term health implications are unknown.

Mrs Law, 55, said: "I picked this seat in order to ask Clive Lewis about his views on women because of the breastfeeding incident. We don't want men with male bodies in our spaces.

"I'm a bit miffed because my opportunity to speak to him at the university was squelched, but if he's game for a debate then I'm game. I don't think these men like women telling them real facts."

The Party of Women stood five candidates in the local elections last month, with none voted in, and is focussed on opposing trans ideology - claiming that allowing children to transition from one gender to another is "abuse".

Mrs Law is a healthcare worker and said she hasn't found time to speak with prospective constituents about her views - but has been subject to "a few threats" on social media.

The mother-of-two added: "It doesn't bother me."

She will stand as a candidate in Norwich South against Labour's Clive Lewis, Conservative candidate David Thomas and the Green's Jamie Osborn.

Sean Bennett is standing for the Liberal Democrats, Graham Burton for Reform UK and Elizabeth Davey is vying for the seat as an independent candidate.
