Roads in the south-east of Oxford were gridlocked this morning after a crash on the Eastern Bypass junction near Horspath.

Morning commuters faced severe delays of around 45 minutes after one lane of the A4142 northbound was forced to close.

Congestion continued to the Littlemore Roundabout and into routes through Oxford with the right turn onto Horspath Driftway blocked.

Thames Valley Police has confirmed that there was a "minor damage-only collision" involving two cars that have since been removed.

The crash, which was first reported around 7.25am on Tuesday, caused major delays until congestion was finally eased around two hours later when Oxfordshire County Council's Oxon Travel account confirmed that all lanes were cleared.

As a result of the incident, The Oxford Bus Company said in a statement that general traffic was diverting via Iffley and Cowley.

The spokesperson said: "As such all services operating via these areas are experiencing major delays of over 45 minutes."

Thames Travel similarly notified customers around 8.30am that there were long delays to X40 and ST1 services on Iffley Road, A4158, and Oxford Road, B480, after the earlier crash.

Oxon Travel confirmed that Thames Valley Police and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were on scene.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
