'They could be pulling their last pint' - 15 North Staffordshire pubs in trouble
The future of 15 North Staffordshire pubs remains uncertain - after a company issued a profit warning. Stonegate operates seven Stoke-on-Trent pubs with a further eight across Newcastle and the Staffordshire Moorlands.
Its venues include Hanley Reflex as well Yates's and Slug & Lettuce, in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Stonegate is grappling with a £2.3 billion debt and is attempting to secure loans to plug the financial blackhole. But despite the bleak picture Stonegate has remained bullish.
Its chief executive David McDowall said this month: "We would like to assure our valued employees and partners that venues are not at risk as a result of this process."
But the GMB union has major concerns and has written to parliament over the issue.
GMB national officer Nadine Houghton said: "Hundreds of much-loved pubs across the West Midlands are in serious danger of pulling their last pint. It’s a disgrace.”
