Derry Girls is about to head into its much anticipated third and final season and a newly released trailer has given a first look at what's ahead for the group.

Channel 4 has announced that the sitcom is set to return for its final instalment on Tuesday, 12 April and will open on the eve of the gang receiving their GCSE results.

Lady Immaculate College's teens are still struggling to navigate the 90s, their first brushes with romance and parties, and of course the fragile peace process in Northern Ireland.

A first-look trailer, set to a soundtrack of 90s classics, includes plenty of neon sportswear for the gang as they try their best to be cool — without much success.

Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), her cousin Orla (Louisa Harland) and friends Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell) and Michelle’s cousin James, aka The Wee English Fella (Dylan Llewellyn), are shown in one scene apparently getting ready to perform as they strut through the school hall in skintight white dressing gowns.

Another scene shows Bridgerton star Coughlan's Clare panicking at a sleepover as she says: "We will perish in this place!", while James replies: "I'm going to die a virgin!".

Derry Girls has released a first image from series three, too, which shows the friends looking like they're getting ready to fight an unseen enemy.

Of course, there are also plenty of scenes with Siobhan McSweeney as Sister Michael, the straight-talking headmistress of Lady Immaculate College, who seems to have convinced the group that they are about to fail their GCSEs.

The series also stars Tommy Tiernan as Erin’s long-suffering father Gerry, Tara Lynne O’Neill as Erin’s mother Mary, Ian McElhinney as Granda Joe and Kathy Kiera Clarke as Aunt Sarah.

Derry Girls was created by Lisa McGee from her own experiences growing up in 90s Derry against the backdrop of the Troubles.

Series one and two are currently available to stream on All4, with series three first announced in April 2019 and finally set to air this year.

Derry Girls series three begins on Tuesday, 12 April at 9.15pm on Channel 4.
