Former midfielder Paul Scholes has welcomed Manchester United's decision to retain Erik ten Hag as manager for next season.

It was confirmed by club sources on Tuesday evening that Ten Hag will be remaining in charge at Old Trafford following the conclusion of Ineos' performance review into the 2023/24 season. It is understood that both parties are now in talks over a new contract for the Dutchman.

Ten Hag was under mounting pressure to keep his job after overseeing an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League. However, he redeemed himself by guiding United to a first FA Cup crown since 2016 last month.

Full focus, both for Ten Hag and the club, can now switch to the summer transfer window. Opening on Friday, the window will represent Sir Jim Ratcliffe's first opportunity to start implementing changes to the squad.

It is crucial United correct the mistakes of yesteryear and put the foundations in place to experience a more successful 2024/25 campaign. And for legendary midfielder Scholes, that is the very least the supporters deserve.

Taking to his Instagram page, Scholes said: "Nice to wake up to this news (Ten Hag staying) although I think Palace away felt like the end. Major improvements needed but at least we have a bit of continuity and don't have to wait for a new regime to settle in.

"Fans have given him and the players incredible support and deserve better next season."

Despite their Premier League finish being used as a stick to beat Ten Hag with, he banked plenty of credit for leading his team to FA Cup glory. That secured his second trophy in as many seasons at Old Trafford and he will be determined to add another piece of silverware to the collection next term.
