Devon railway to be transformed into amazing 1940s attraction

Nostalgia is coming to South Devon Railway this month at its 'Back to the '40s' event. Visitors will be taken back to the golden era on Saturday, July 6 and Sunday, July 7.

The popular ‘Back to the 1940s’ event transforms the heritage railway into a vibrant recreation of bygone days, offering a nostalgic experience that promises to delight visitors of all ages. South Devon Railway’s classic train services set the stage for a lively celebration of the Victory Generation, complete with swinging live entertainment, historical re-enactors, vintage vehicles, and a variety of trade stands that vividly bring the era to life.

Highlights of the 2024 event the Entertainment Marquee featuring Fine Whines Vintage Jazz on Saturday, and South Devon Big Band on Sunday, as well as lively dance displays and tutorials from South West Lindy Hoppers. There will be vintage civilian and military vehicles on show alongside a wartime display at Staverton Station.

There will also be vintage clothing and accessory trade stands and a bar serving ales, lager, cider, and wine. All the entertainment, as well as unlimited travel on the heritage train services, is included with a train ticket.

The multi-award-winning South Devon Railway is one of Devon's and the West Country's most cherished tourist attractions. As the longest-established steam railway in the southwest, it proudly celebrates over 50 years of preservation.

This seven-mile former Great Western Railway branch line, built in 1872, runs through the picturesque valley of the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes.
