Dion Sanderson makes apology and promise after his Birmingham City ‘mistakes’

Dion Sanderson has apologised to Birmingham City supporters after taking a step back to reflect on his mistakes last season.

Sanderson, who was appointed Blues captain at the beginning of last season, has removed himself from social media since the club’s relegation from the Championship was confirmed. While his form on the field suffered following the departure of John Eustace in October, Sanderson ran into trouble off the field in April when the club confirmed he had been charged with drink driving.

Blues decided to strip Sanderson of the captaincy for their final three matches and it remains to be seen whether new manager Chris Davies will reinstate the 24-year-old. Sanderson is eager to right the wrongs of last season and has been working on his fitness with local non-league side Redditch United in preparation for the League One kick-off.

In a lengthy post on Instagram, Sanderson said: “Hello Bluenoses, I haven’t been on social media for some time now. I felt it was important for me to take a step back and reflect on the past few months.

“It’s been tough to deal with as a player, a captain and as a person. I want to apologise to you all for the mistakes I’ve made both on and off the pitch.

"Birmingham City is my home. It’s a privilege to represent this football club and to feel the love and support of the fans, from the moment I arrive at the stadium to the minute I step off the pitch.

“I’m eager for the season to start and I’m looking forward to getting back to work with much more focus, hard work and resilience. I have no doubt that we’ll overcome this setback together and get the club moving back in the right direction again.

“Hope to see you all very soon and most importantly, thank you. Your support has been incredible. KRO.”
