The Doctor’s time is almost up…

Will a female Doctor take over from Peter Capaldi?

It’s no secret that Peter Capaldi is leaving ‘Doctor Who’ after the upcoming Christmas Special… but we still have no idea who will be taking over the iconic sci-fi role. There’s been plenty of speculation as to who that might be – from Kris Marshall to Richard Ayoade.

But could we finally see our first female Doctor?

The ‘Doctor Who’ series finale saw the twelfth Doctor edging towards regeneration – the process by which he will eventually transform into the next Doctor.

Who will he become?

At the moment, that remains uncertain.

But Series 10 has seen more than one hint that we could be about to get a female Doctor for the first time in the show’s history… and that’s a pretty big deal.

The season finale – titled ‘The Doctor Falls’ – included the most obvious reference yet. When John Simm’s version of The Master asks: “Is the future going to be all girl?” the Doctor then replies: “We can only hope.”

Not exactly subtle…

But we’ve seen The Doctor discussing gender a number of times throughout this series.

During Episode 11 (‘World Enough And Time’) it’s Bill who asks the Doctor about the Time Lords’ perception of gender. “Time Lords?” she asks. “Bit flexible on the whole man/woman thing, yeah?”

And the Doctor answers: “We’re the most civilized civilization in the universe. We’re billions of years beyond your petty obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes.”

Even beyond our discussion of a female Doctor, perhaps?

Of course, it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen rumours of a female Doctor. Ever since Peter Capaldi announced his exit, fans and critics alike have speculated about the possibility of the next Doctor being a woman.

And there’s even been a few suggestions as to who that might be.

Olivia Coleman, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and even Tilda Swinton have been linked to the role.

But who will eventually take over from Peter Capaldi?

It looks as though we’ll have to wait until the Christmas Special to find out.
