Doctor Who companion Pearl Mackie appears on set

‘Doctor Who’ companion Pearl Mackie has filmed her first scenes.

That’s right folks – ‘Doctor Who’ Series 10 has begun filming in Cardiff. And it looks as though we’ve got our first, new glimpse of TV newcomer Pearl Mackie as she shoots her first scenes on location alongside The Doctor himself, Peter Capaldi.

Thankfully, she couldn’t look more at home.

After Clara Oswald’s heart-breaking exit during ‘Doctor Who’ Series 9, newcomer Pearl Mackie was introduced as the new companion.

Of course, the reveal of Pearl Mackie as the new companion proved to be hugely popular… and was announced with a rather cool short video which aired during the FA Cup Semi-Final between Everton and Manchester United.

In fact, the video itself racked up huge viewing figures, with millions of Facebook views and almost half-a-million YouTube hits. And it soon became the most-shared content in ‘Doctor Who’ history.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family,” she said after the announcement. “It’s such an extraordinary British institution – I couldn’t be prouder to call the Tardis my home. I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space.”

But who is Pearl Mackie playing?

All we know right know is that her name is ‘Bill’… and that she definitely doesn’t realise just how deadly a Dalek really is. Aside from her Cockney accent, we know very little else about ‘Doctor Who’s new addition.

“Reading the script at the audition, I thought Bill was wicked,” said Mackie. “Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable, with a bit of geekiness thrown in.” The actor described shooting the trailer as “absolutely mental”

But according to Peter Capaldi, the character is a complete newbie.

“The nice thing is that she is not part of the Doctor Who world,” he said. “So the whole idea of travelling in time and space will be new to her… It’s a while since we’ve had a companion like that.”

Of course, Peter Capaldi’s previous companion had already extensively travelled alongside his earlier incarnation, played by Matt Smith… so this is the first time Capaldi’s Doctor has been thrust together with a long-term companion who knows nothing about time and space travel.

And that’s going to be an absolute joy to see.

Of course it’s not just new faces, as ‘Doctor Who’ Series 10 includes the return of some fan favourites. Matt Lucas is back as Nardole… though it’s currently unclear whether or not he’ll be clambering alongside them in a huge, cyborg body.

And everyone’s favourite baddie, Michelle Gomez, is returning as Missy.

‘Doctor Who’ returns to BBC One in 2017.
