Driver admits dangerous driving after dashcam footage shows him swerve into a cyclist

A man who was caught on camera swerving his car into a cyclist, knocking him to the ground, has admitted dangerous driving.

Footage of the incident, captured on a dashcam, showed the Ford Mondeo braking heavily near the cyclist, who was with a friend.

The video, released by Essex Police, shows the cyclist – gesture at the driver and the car then swerve into him and knock him to the ground.

The cyclist – a man in his 30s – was taken to hospital for treatment after the incident in Colchester in May 2016, but was not seriously injured.

The car drove off and driver Ashley Merrett, 30, was arrested later that day.

Merrett, of Mumford Close, West Bergholt, Essex, admitted dangerous driving, causing actual bodily harm and common assault, at Ipswich Crown Court, Essex Police said.

He appeared in court on December 18 and will be sentenced in February.
