Emmerdale confirms Ella's future after temporary exit

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale has shared the first official details of Ella Forster's return to the village.

Ella will head back to the Dales within the next few weeks, which is sure to spark fresh tensions with her struggling ex-boyfriend Liam Cavanagh.

Last month, the ITV soap aired one of its darkest storyline twists as Ella revealed that she is a child killer.

Ella took the life of her friend Joanne in a jealous rage when she was younger. The incident took place on the day of Ella's 11th birthday – she was known as Ruth at the time but later assumed a new identity after years locked away for her crime.

When Liam learned the truth, he was outraged that Ella had pursued a relationship with him while concealing her dark past. The revelations brought back traumatic memories of losing his teenage daughter Leanna, who was murdered by Meena Jutla in 2021.

Speaking at an Emmerdale press conference this week, the ITV soap's new producer Sophie Roper shared details of what's next for Ella when she returns.

Roper told Digital Spy and other media: "We've had the Ella storyline recently, which had a really huge twist. It was quite unexpected but really powerful.

"Ella will continue in the show and her past will continue to haunt her. Her relationship with Liam will remain complicated and we'll continue to question: will she ever get her happily-ever-after? Can she ever escape her past that's led her to this point?"

Liam ordered Ella to leave the village for good last month, but Paula Lane – who plays Ella – has since shared photos to reveal that she's still filming for the show.

Jonny McPherson, who plays Liam, has previously expressed scepticism over whether his character can ever forgive Ella.

He recently said: "I think this relationship is now almost definitely cooked! I mean, never say never, but I would say it's almost definitely it. I don't think there is any coming back from it.

"On multiple occasions, Ella could have told him the truth. She had so many chances to open up and tell him about her past but she didn't.

"And just the fact she moved into his house and they were actually cohabiting. He was living at such a close proximity to someone who had killed somebody's daughter. So many layers of lies. He feels utterly betrayed and very upset."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
