The Avenues Open Gardens, an annual urban open gardens event in Hull's HU5 area, is set to take place over two Sunday afternoons in late June and July.

This year, the event will be held on Sunday 30th June and Sunday 7th July 2024, from 1pm to 5pm each day. With 37 private gardens and allotments open to the public, there's something for every gardening enthusiast.

Since its inception in 1976, the event has grown to become what is believed to be the UK's largest inner-city open garden event, with proceeds going to charities such as Dove House Hospice and Rooted in Hull this year.

The event isn't a competition and there's no vetting process - any local resident can open their garden. Visitors can expect a variety of gardening styles, unique architecture, and large gardens featuring original features like stable blocks and outhouses.

Refreshments and plants will be available for purchase, and entertainment will include music in the gardens and at St Cuthbert's and St Ninian's church, choirs, folk music, ukelele groups, garland dancing, and performances by Hull Community Theatre.

On Sunday 7th July, a plaque will be unveiled at 45 Westbourne Avenue in honour of Richard Hoggart, author of The Uses of Literacy, who lived at this address.

Hull Training and Adult Education will also be at the Open Gardens Events offering a whole host of workshops. On Sunday June 30, the team will be hosting:
